The largest of West Virginia's cities, and also it's state capital, Charleston sits at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in Kanawha county West Virginia. Salt brines along the Kanawha River were the source of Charleston's first major industry, creating an economic boom in the early 19th century.

When the first railroad, the Chesapeake & Ohio, reached the city in 1873, opportunities opened up to transport Charleston's natural resources east and the industrial landscape was greatly changed. Coal mining interests grew rapidly, and during the early 20th century, chemical companies were attracted to the area by the coal, salt, natural gas, and other resources Charleston offered.

Nearby Clendenin, West Virginia was the site of the first petrochemical plant in the world, Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation, which was built in 1920. Shortly after, land on Blaine Island in South Charleston—located on the south side of the Kanawha River, opposite the city of Charleston—was leased in preparation to begin production of several ethylene-based chemicals.

When the plastics company Bakelite merged with this growing chemical company in 1939, the company was renamed Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation; several decades later the company name would be shortened to simply Union Carbide Corporation. In 2001, Union Carbide became part of The Dow Chemical company.

Along with other chemical plants, glass production and a Naval Ordnance and Armor Plant have been located in Charleston and its neighboring cities. Charleston's bottle and sheet glass plants were among the larges in the world during the first World War, putting many smaller operations out of business.

Charleston Asbestos Injuries

Asbestos injured many in Charleston, WV. Workers at the steel mills, chemical plants, power stations, and the many other types of companies used asbestos in a variety of applications.

The production of chemicals using the natural gas present in Charleston required high heat and caustic chemicals. Because of its resistance to both intensely high temperatures and many harsh chemicals, asbestos was regularly used to protect equipment and, theoretically, chemical plant workers. Used in insulation, pads, pipe coverings, and even clothing, asbestos was used by many chemical plant workers on a daily basis. Oftentimes, workers were totally unaware of the presence of asbestos, let alone risk asbestos posed.

Some products may have held friable, or easily airborne, asbestos from the start, while others may have released deadly asbestos fibres under the abrasive actions of daily industrial use. Asbestos exposures led to many cancerous and non-cancerous diseases in chemical plants and other facilities in Charleston, South Charleston, and Clendenin where heat, chemicals, and electrical current was used in the product of various products.

This has unfortunately led to asbestos-related diseases in some industrial and construction workers in Charleston. Mesothelioma, lung cancer, colon cancer, and a host of other asbestos-related diseases are caused by asbestos exposure.
