The second-largest city in West Virginia after the capital (Charleston) Huntington was initially founded as a railroad town. Established by Collis P. Huntington in 1870, Huntington was the terminal train station of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (C&O Railroad) when the railroad was a route between Richmond, Virginia and the Ohio River.
With transportation available, entrepreneurs soon began exploiting the natural resources of the Huntington area. In addition to jobs that supported the railway, industries based on local coal mining and glassworks were the industries on which Huntington depended. Vast reserves of sand that was almost pure silica ensured glass was an important industry in much of West Virginia.
Steel was first produced in Huntington in 1909 by Steel of West Virginia, which was owned by H.K. Porter from the mid 1950s until the early 80s. One of Huntington's first chemical plants was the Standard Ultramarine Company (later Holland-SUCO, and after that purchased by BASF) that was built and began production in 1913.
In 1922 Huntington's industrial landscape made a major change when the International Nickel Company established their Huntington Works as a processing mill for nickel alloy. INCO grew rapidly with government contracts fueled by the demands of World War II and the plant became a fully integrated nickel alloy processing mill. Huntington was even West Virginia's largest city in 1930; Charleston maintained a greater metropolitan population, however.
Huntington Asbestos Injuries
Many of the industries which supported Huntington from its first days used asbestos in small or large ways; the railroad, coal, and glass industries all required heat and/or friction in various applications and asbestos was used in applications such as gaskets, insulating coverings, and protective clothing. The introduction of more severe conditions that steel, chemical, and alloy manufacturing created certainly increased the use of asbestos by workers in the Huntington area.
Despite Huntington's nickel alloy plant having a more efficient electric arc furnace as opposed to a traditional blast furnace, asbestos was still used on the pipes, fittings, and other equipment as protection from the heat. Workers protected from the heat from the furnace or from other extreme conditions on their job, often wore asbestos in the form of gloves, overcoats, and aprons.
