Although it was settled as early as the 1770s, Weirton really began to develop in 1909 when Earnest T. Weir constructed Weirton Steel along the Ohio River. After growing steadily for several decades, Weirton Steel combined with Michigan Steel and M.A. Hanna Steel to form National Steel, quickly becoming one of the nation's largest steel producers.

The city of Weirton finally incorporated in 1947, encompassing five smaller communities, and became the state's eighth largest city. Weirton enjoyed growing steel production throughout the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

During the 70s and 80s, however, international competition grew within the steel industry and aluminum replaced tin in the beverage industry. Weirton was losing ground on both fronts, so National Steel announced in 1982 that it would no longer invest significantly in the Weirton division. In reaction, the employees bought the company from National Steel, becoming one of the largest—and most successful—employee-owned steel companies in the world.

While it is one of the younger cities in West Virginia, Weirton shares an industrial landscape similar to its older cousins. Steel and other metal production looms large over the community, while power plants, construction, and various other industrial works play important, if less overt, roles.

Weirton Asbestos Injuries

Steel production has certainly dominated Weirton's industrial profile for most (if not all) of its history. Weirton's steelworkers, like those throughout the world, faced the extreme conditions created by blast furnaces, molten metals, and heavy equipment.

Asbestos linings were used to insulate and fireproof furnaces, boilers, and pipes. Asbestos garments clothed workers to protect them from the heat. Asbestos breaks were used on cranes and other heavy equipment used to move iron, steel, and other products.

Along with the extreme conditions created by the production of steel, asbestos was also useful as a strengthener in basic products like floor and ceiling tiles, roofing, and insulation. Weirton's mid-20th century growth coincided with hundreds of asbestos-containing construction materials and other products that used asbestos for its lack of conductivity, lightweight strength, or simply its cheap availability.

Everyone from electricians, carpenters, and tradesmen who constructed Weirton's buildings; to mechanics who changed break pads; to the summer construction worker who worked scraping up old flooring to be replaced with new were potentially exposed to asbestos. Secondary exposures to family members of workers who carried asbestos home on their clothing meant even those not working in an "at risk" trade were not immune to the cancer-causing mineral.
